Thanks to the blockbuster feature film, Transformer action figures are once again at the forefront of children's toy innovation. Probably the most impressive aspect of the toys over the years has been the engineering excellence required to turn the characters depicted in the animated series into working, transforming toys.
Considering that, here is my list of the top 5 most innovative Transformers teams:
1) Dinobots
The Dinobots were a break from the traditional robot-turns-into-vehicle transformations. Instead, Dinobots turned into . . . you guessed it, Dinosaurs. Not to mention that the leader of the Dinobots, Grimlock, is one of the most powerful Transformers in existence, Autobot and Decepticon alike.
2) The Constructicons
The Constructicons were a group of construction vehicles that individually turned into robots, but their special ability was that all of the Constructicons could combine into one super-robot named Devastator, possibly the most fearsome Decepticon ever.
3) The Headmasters
Another engineering marvel, Headmasters represented two transforming robots in one. In this case, the heads of the Headmasters could alone turn into a small robot that could control the body.
4) Powerlinx (aka Powerlinks)
The Powerlinks line usually consisted of two Autobots combining to form one larger "power-linked" robot, with one Autobot forming the lower body and one forming the upper body. What was most interesting about this line is that bots of similar sizes were compatible with each other for combining, rather than being limited to a defined combining unit.
5) Omnicons
While these might not have been engineering marvels, they were important to the story line. Omnicons were both Autobots and Decepticons who essentially defected and became master miners and craftsmen of Energon, the material that powers all Transformer life.
In truth, most of the characters produced are very interesting. Backed by a complex (and rather convoluted) story line and innovative engineering, classic Transformer action figures are great toys both for collecting and playing.
